Electricians 668
They’ve turned the switch on at the downtown’s Renaissance Place, Buccaneer Bay at Best Western, Office Depot and McAllister Deli, as well as Battle Ground Middle and Woodland Elementary schools. Their Purdue work includes Hockmeyer Hall, Duhme Hall, Shealy Hall and Lilly Hall. Each year the Electrical Workers accept about 15 to 20 apprentices, who must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or GED. They are trained at the Ivy Tech campus apprenticeship facility. The five-year program includes 850 classroom hours, 9,500 on-the-job training hours and an Ivy Tech Community College associate degree. The IBEW also provides an award-winning journeyman upgrade program, assuring its members are always well-versed in new technology and safety techniques. Local 668 reaches out to high school students through the Learning for Life program, which introduces young students to the trades. The IBEW also sponsors local events, such as Dancing in the Streets. Its volunteer activities include Habitat for Humanity and Family Services. Members’ most visible contribution is downtown each holiday season, where they hang banners and snowflake decorations and light the courthouse dome, Big Four Depot and trees.
