Bricklayers 4

From education to healthcare and commerce, members of Bricklayers Local 4, Chapter 11, are on the job. Education projects include Purdue’s Pfendler Hall addition, Wade Utility Plant renovation, Wiley Dining Court, Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering, Battle Ground Middle and Woodland Elementary schools.

The Bricklayers are on the job at Clarian Arnett Medical Center and St. Elizabeth East, and they have worked at Caterpillar, Kirby Risk Service Center, Lilly Tippecanoe Labs, Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. and Tate & Lyle’s North Plant expansion.

An ambitious four-year apprenticeship training program includes 576 hours in the classroom and 5,424 on-the-job training hours. Apprentices master building layout, construction math, pattern bonds, masonry wall styles, arch construction, flashing, waterproofing, pointing and cleaning, blueprint reading and other skills.

Advanced classes are offered in welding, first aid/CPR, OSHA certification, construction management and steward training. Another two Ivy Tech classes are required to earn a technical degree and a third for an associate degree, both paid for by the program.

The Bricklayers frequently assist Habitat for Humanity and recently built baseball dugouts in Otterbein as a community service.
