| Elevator 34 Members of the Elevator Constructors 34 installed elevators at Purdue’s Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering, Renaissance Place, and at Best Western’s new Buccaneer Bay. They’ve also been on the job at Clarian Arnett Medical Center, Caterpillar, Lilly Tippecanoe Labs and Tate & Lyle. Technological advances demand comprehensive, ongoing training, which the local provides. It accepts from 10-20 applicants annually for its four-year program that includes 144 hours of classroom and 1,700 hours of on-the-job training annually. Apprentices receive training in safety, material handling, rigging, hoisting, blueprints, electronics, circuit tracing, hydraulics and construction wiring. They also learn elevator and escalator terminology, assembly, installation, operation, customer relations, solid state theory and application, microprocessor-based controls, and solid-state motor controls. Apprentices take a written exam following training. Upgrade and refresher courses are also offered. Elevator mechanics are licensed by the state of Indiana, with at least eight hours of training required every two years to renew licenses.
