| Ironworkers 22 Training and safety are top priorities for the Ironworkers, who climb rigging, build bridges, work with structural iron and rebar, and move heavy machinery. In their four-year program, apprentices spend 400 hours in the classroom and 1,000 hours in closely supervised on-the-job training each year. Mastery of their trade includes studies in blueprint reading, structural steel properties and handling, power rigging, rebar work, chain link fencing, welding, ornamental and sheeting work, and pre-cast concrete and post tensioning. They also focus on safety precautions and protection for others, so vital in their work. Applications are accepted year round, and about 20 apprentices are chosen each year. Journeymen also continue education throughout their career, with upgrade classes in hazardous material handling, confined space training, OSHA safety procedures, advanced welding, and CPR. Recent and current projects include many at Purdue University: Mechanical Engineering, Mackey Arena, Meadow Lake Wind Farm, Fowler Ridge Wind Farm and Hoosier Wind Farm. Industrial work includes Caterpillar, Ice Cream Specialties, Lilly Tippecanoe Labs and Subaru of America Automotive Inc. They’ve also worked on the Clarian Arnett and St. Elizabeth hospitals, the Pearl River Lift Station and the West Lafayette Wastewater Treatment Plan, among other projects. In community service, the Ironworkers furnish the building and utilities for the Union Food Pantry. They also volunteered time at Triangle Park and set the globe fountain at the Columbian Park Zoo.
