Sheet Metal 20
Full-time, professional instructors teach apprentices blueprint reading, layout, design, computer aided drafting, welding, air testing and balancing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning service technology. They also study energy management and safety, and upgrade classes are offered to all journeymen. Local 20 also participates in the Indiana Union Construction Substance Abuse Trust, a program promoting safety and employee well-being in the workplace. Among the local’s recent and current projects are Purdue’s Beck Agricultural Center, Electrical and Computer Engineering Building, Grissom Hall for Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Building, Pfendler Hall addition and others on campus; several school projects, Caterpillar, Lilly Tippecanoe Labs and Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. They also worked on White County’s new hospital and Frankfort’s new elementary school, and in Lafayette, Renaissance Place, the Howarth Center and Lafayette Pavilions. Helping with community needs, members worked at Triangle Park and the Boy Scout Camp this year. In January 2008, the Sheet Metal Workers Union merged with the United Transportation Union.
