At Purdue, the local worked on Windsor Hall, McCutcheon Hall, Wiley Dining Hall, Mann Hall, Forney Hall, Memorial Union Retail Dining and others. Healthcare, too, benefited from their skills: Clarian Arnett, St. Elizabeth East and Unity facilities. Apprentices learn their trade during a five-year program leading to journeyman classification and an Ivy Tech Community College associate degree, spending 1,500 hours in on-the-job training and 216 hours in the classroom each year. Beyond their trade, they study technical writing, speech communication, labor history and mathematics. Currently, 228 apprentices are enrolled. Applications are taken each January. Journeyman upgrade training is also available in AutoCAD, CFC certification, orbital welding, plumbing code, OSHA safety, and back-flow testing and prevention. This year, the local helped out United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Family Services and the Learning for Life program.
