Roofers and Waterproofers 119 Rain, sleet, hail and snow all attack the work done by Roofers and Waterproofers Local 119. Because of their training, roofs withstand the elements, keeping buildings open for operation. Roofers have been on the job at Clarian Arnett Medical Center, Caterpillar, Subaru of Indiana Automotive and several Purdue buildings—Electrical and Computer Engineering, Grissom Hall for Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Building, Purdue Memorial Union and Wiley Dining Court, among others. Members master their skills in a three-year apprenticeship program, which includes 144 hours of classroom training annually and emphasizes proper use of tools, application techniques, safety, quality and application of roofing systems. Programs begin each September and May. Members are drug-screened and must attend and pass the 10-hour OSHA training to receive certification. The program is approved by the Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training. The local regularly helps Habitat for Humanity and participates in high school apprenticeship trade shows.
