Members are trained for these and other projects through a four-year apprenticeship program that includes nine months of classroom work and year-round on-the-job training. Apprentices learn all phases of the glass industry, including glass installation, blueprint reading, metal products, sealants, closers, latches, locks, aluminum doors and window systems for commercial and residential buildings. About 20 to 25 applicants are accepted each year. Journeymen continue training at special sessions throughout the year. These include first aid and safety classes. Members volunteer their time for social service projects, including Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in April, an Indianapolis project that helps low-income homeowners with repairs and renovations.
