The Tippecanoe Building and Construction Trades Council covers a nine-county region which includes Tippecanoe, Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fountain, Warren, Montgomery and White counties. Our mission is to highlight the over 2,500 skilled craftsmen who live and work in this region and are members of the 17 trades associations that make up the Council.
These members have collectively spent tens of thousands of hours on the job and in the classroom, learning their craft through their respective apprenticeship programs.
These also are the same members that make up the fabric of the local community by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, coaching Little League, raising funds for the United Way, or helping the local food pantry, to name a few.
In this publication you will find contact information for all the 17 trades including apprenticeship training and business opportunities. Please accept this 35th annual Tippecanoe Building Trades Council magazine for your reference and use.
As always we are here to make your next construction project a success by suppling you with quality, competent, drug-free, skilled, local craftsmen and craftswomen. You, as the owner, have the right to demand of your General Contractors to use skilled Union labor.
By doing this you will send a strong message to the local elected officials, economic investors, and business leaders that you are willing and able to make the investment, not only in business, but also in the community. Many of the local businesses and municipalities in the nine-county region use a strong skilled Union workforce to achieve success.
We look forward to hearing from you. Good luck with your next project!

PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Tippecanoe Building Trades members continue to build and improve the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette. Current projects include:
Bechtel Innovation Design Center
Controlled Environment Phenotyping
Creighton Hall and Land O’Lakes Center
Discovery Learning and Research
Engineering Renovations
Flex Lab Facility
Football Performance Complex
Hampton Hall Renovation

Zucrow Lab Renovation/Addition
The Wilmeth Active Learning Center is the University’s No. 1 capital project since 2012. The $79 million, 164,000-square-foot building houses 27 classrooms, interspersed with library study and collaborative spaces.
Wilmeth Active Learning Center is in the middle of campus where the brick smokestack once stood. Artifacts from the 1924 Power and Heating Plant are
displayed throughout the building, along with larger-than-life enlargements of historic photos showing early mechanical engineering scenes. The strong, sleek, industrial look of the building interior echoes the mechanical past of the site.
A replica of the painting “Washington Crossing the Delaware” by Emanuel Leutze adorns the east wall of the grand Reading Room. The room also has a view of the Purdue Bell Tower.
PURDUE FOOTBALL COMPLEX
Purdue’s new Football Performance Complex is a three-level structure, adjoining the north end of Mollenkopf Athletic Center. When complete, it will include a locker room, weight room, coaching offices, meeting rooms, player development room, equipment area and a space for sports medicine.

Purdue’s new Animal Sciences complex (top of page and above) includes three parts: Creighton Hall, the Purina Pavillion, and the Land O’Lakes Center for Experiential Learning. The three buildings comprise a
128,000-square-foot agricultural and life sciences facility at the northeast corner of Harrison and Russell streets on the West Lafayette campus.
Bechtel Innovation Design Center is a new student project facility at the northeast corner of Third and Russell streets.
Purdue’s new Flex Lab Facility is 107,000-square-feet faced with brick and glass at the corner of Nimitz Drive and Gates Road. It will be used for multidisciplinary research.
INFRASTRUCTURE • MEDICAL
Work is progressing on the eastbound span of the U.S. 52 bridge across the Wabash River in West Lafayette.
The project involves replacing the existing structure with a new, approximately 938-foot long, eight-span bridge on the existing
alignment. The new superstructure will be a concrete bulb tee design.
The bridge will provide two 12- foot travel lanes, standard shoulders (6-foot left and 11-foot right), and
a multi-use trail on the bridge deck with accommodation for connections to a future multi-use trail on the south side of the road.
Tippecanoe Building Trades members are also at work on major repair, widening, and replacement of bridges, decks, and road surfaces on Interstate 65 through Tippecanoe County.

Lafayette’s Brown Street Connector project will store and convey wet weather flows to the Pearl River Lift Station. The project includes 4,230 linear feet of 72-inch diameter gravity sewer, 390 linear feet of 84-inch gravity sewer, and 25 linear feet of 96-inch gravity sewer.
St. Elizabeth Hospital East is constructing a new three-story patient tower at their Creasy Lane location in Lafayette, which will include 106,000 square feet of space and 52 new patient beds.
ROADS • STREETSCAPES
Tippecanoe Building Trades members have built miles of new and improved roads, intersections, roundabouts, and bridges all around Lafayette, West Lafayette, and Tippecanoe County.
Three major urban projects have completely changed the face of Lafayette/West Lafayette. The work required Union-strong skill, experience, and endurance.
The STATE STREET REDEVELOPMENT project involves major work on the Riverfront area, Chauncey Village, the Purdue campus, and Stadium Avenue. Improvements include new roundabouts, redesigned travel lanes and two-way traffic, sidewalks, bike path, outdoor seating and gathering spaces, lighting, and stormwater/drainage.
The DOWNTOWN LAFAYETTE STREETSCAPE
project spans from Fourth through 11th Streets and includes landscaping, lighting, curb extensions and midblock crosswalks, bench seating, and bicycle racks.

Welding, burning, heavy and high rigging, and layout work are the most important skills a Boilermaker apprentice learns.
Members work primarily in plants that are considered heavy industry--steel mills, power generation plants
for utilities, chemical plants, refineries, and mills. These plants can pose dangerous working conditions, so safety training is constantly taught and reviewed by the Union, the contractor, and the owner. This alliance has proved very successful in minimizing lost time accidents.
Boilermakers #374 started their apprenticeship program in 1968 and it has grown to over 250 apprentices currently enrolled in the four-year program. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 640 hours of in-class and shop training and 6,000 jobsite hours.
All Boilermakers of Local 374 are part of the MOST (Mobilization, Optimization, Stabilization and Training) Program. This program gives contractors access to members’ welding and training certifications 24 hours a day. In this program 100% of Boilermakers dispatched
to jobsites have been drug tested annually and have 30- hour OSHA training.
The Boilermakers are dedicated to providing expertise to companies and owners. Training centers are located in Dale and Hammond, IN. The training staff including Nick Tokarz in Hammond and Pete Merkel and Steve Hurm in Dale, provide decades of experience to apprentices.
Apprentice applications are accepted monthly on designated dates and times which are posted at www. local374.org.

INSULATION CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION
MECHANICAL INSULATION
Mechanical insulation is the one thing that goes into a building and starts paying for itself as soon as the system is activated – immediately saving energy and reducing greenhouse emissions.
FIRE STOPPING
Fire stopping is part of effective compartmentation: “boxes” built within a building or other structure to keep fire from spreading from the room of origin to other parts of the building or other structure.
ASBESTOS & LEAD MITIGATION
The safe and thorough removal and proper disposal of any type of asbestos abatement and lead abatement can include acoustic ceilings, furnace insulations, HVAC ducts, piping, sprayed-on fire proofing, and sound insulation, floor and ceiling tiles.
SOUND ATTENUATION
Proper installation of these noise reducing systems is essential for maximum performance of the mechanical system as well as the acoustical function.
SPECIALTY FABRICATION
Unique, custom insulation-fabricating solutions for the cutting, die-cutting, slitting or sawing required for any project’s specifications, including varying degrees in temperature application, fire or noise-control insulation.
Insulators are highly trained and skilled at a multitude of construction trades including mechanical insulation, fire stopping, asbestos and lead mitigation or abatement, sound attenuation, and specialty fabrications required in custom mechanical insulation installations. Union insulators and contractors utilize best practices for green installation and are most qualified for LEED certified projects.

Plumbers & Steamfitters fabricate, assemble, install, maintain and repair piping systems that transport all types of fluids, slurries, and gas in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
Local 157 Plumbers and Steamfitters employed by signatory contractors are on the job at Purdue sites including the new Animal Life Science building, Brown Chemistry, Hampton Hall, Memorial Union and Matthews Hall, just to name a few. The Wade Utility plant along with the Satellite Chiller plant regularly employ dozens of Local 157 members who insure heat, air-conditioning, and electrical power to the entire campus.
These areas coupled with regular renovations and additions to the roughly 7 miles of underground utility steam and chilled piping located throughout the campus underground tunnel network keep our members busy throughout the year.
Our institutional work includes many new and renovation projects throughout our Northern jurisdiction in virtually every public/private school corporation. One of the most notable at this time is the $22 million new middle school for West Lafayette
School Corporation, along with several renovations and additions for Lafayette School Corporation.
Some of our heavy industrial customers include General Electric, Wabash National, Tate & Lyle North and South plants, Subaru Industrial Automotive,
Arconic, Evonik Deggusa, Archer Daniels Midland, Frito- Lay and several wastewater municipal treatment plants both public and private.
Our HVAC and refrigeration service sector continues to grow as more and more customers call upon our skilled trade mechanics to help design, install, repair, or
replace antiqued systems both in the light commercial sector and the heavy industrial sector.
Our members and contractors have replaced or repaired office air conditioning comfort systems that require one service tech all the way to using multiple service techs orchestrating a helicopter crane for large scale replacement of several roof top air handling units.
Local 157 was established in 1896 and has 1,780 members in 16 counties including (in Indiana) Benton, Carroll, Clay, Clinton, Fountain, Greene, Montgomery, Parke, Sullivan, Tippecanoe, Vermillion, Vigo, Warren, White and parts of Knox and Putnam, and (in Illinois) Crawford, Vermilion, Douglas, Clark, Edgar and Richland.
Journeyman training and certifications available include OSHA 10, OSHA 30, welding, industrial rigging, AutoCAD, CFC certification, plumbing code, back-flow testing and prevention, medical gas, instrumentation and valve repair.
Members benefit from a health and welfare plan, national and local pension plans, local savings plan, 401(k) retirement plan, and an eye and dental insurance plan.

Members enjoy such benefits as health insurance coupled with both a pension plan and a supplemental defined contribution retirement plan.
Technical Degree
While completing apprenticeship, an apprentice not only receives Building Trades Journeyman (BTJ) status, but also earns an Associate's Degree as we are affiliated with Ivy Tech Community College. All at very little cost to the apprentice. Books, dues and inititiation fees are all that we require.
